Insect and Beetle Trail

Inspired by M.G. Leonards award winning book ‘Beetle Boy’, we will be running an educational Insect and Beetle Trail around the 12 acre woodland garden over the summer holidays (from Monday 24th July 17). Families will be invited to explore the garden guided by the Beetle Trail which will journey through the woodland quarry and garden teaching visitors how to identify Beetle species as well as informing about their habitats and life cycles. There will be Beetle identification sheets and also a display of sample Beetles donated by PHD entomologist, Fran Sconce, from Harper Adams University. Families will be asked to collect items along the trail and then make their own beetle to take home. M.G. Leonards books will also be available for sale in the gift room. The trail is free of charge and aims to educate children and families about Beetles, other insects, and wildlife that lives within the 12 acre hillside garden.

Tile Decorating Workshop at Jackfield Tile Museum

Join a drop-in tile decorating workshop between 10am and 3.30pm and try the tube lining technique to produce your own ceramic masterpiece; you could make a collection of coasters, a circular door plaque or a gift for a loved one on a heart shaped tile. Activities vary from day-to-day; tiles cost from £5 each and can be fired and sent home later for a small extra charge to cover postage and packing. It takes up to 1½ hours to decorate your tile so last admission to the workshops is 2pm.

Traditional Churchyard Management

Learn how to manage a churchyard in the traditional fashion - with a scythe! As part of Church Tourism Week 2017 churchyard charity Caring for God’s Acre will demonstrate how to manage churchyards in the traditional way using the scythe. Before the widespread use of the mower, churchyards were left to flower during the summer months and then scythed in late July. Hay was made and was given to the vicar as part of his stipend. During this day our volunteers (who manage churchyards using scythes every week) will be peacefully scything while Ben, our volunteer co-ordinator, will be on hand to answer any questions.
